Abstract

This study evaluates the political participation and representation of persons with disabilities in Ondo State, Nigeria, from 1999 to 2018. Despite constitutional provisions and international frameworks advocating for the rights of individuals with disabilities, their active involvement in the political landscape remains limited. This research examines the barriers faced by this demographic in accessing political processes, including social stigma, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of awareness about their rights. Through qualitative and quantitative methods, including surveys and interviews with key stakeholders, the study assesses the level of engagement of persons with disabilities in political activities, their representation in political offices, and the effectiveness of policies aimed at promoting inclusivity. The findings reveal significant disparities in political participation, highlighting the need for targeted initiatives to enhance the visibility and representation of individuals with disabilities in Ondo State politics. The study advocates for policy reforms that promote accessibility, awareness, and active engagement of persons with disabilities in the political sphere, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive democratic process in Nigeria.
